2011 Tennessee’s Traffic Deaths Lowest Since 1963

Friday, January 20th, 2012

According to figures from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office and the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security, the state’s traffic-related deaths for 2011 were 947, 84 fewer than the previous year. That makes last year the safest 12 month period in Tennessee since 1963.

The Knoxville New Sentinel reports the total the state’s traffic-related deaths in 1963 was 941.

Many, including TN law enforcement representatives and state officials, contribute the decrease in traffic fatalities to the tough enforcement of state drunken driving and seat belt laws. They also contribute the decrease to an increase use of seatbelts throughout the state and new laws restricting texting while driving.

Tennessee fatal traffic accidents, wrongful death

State Troopers arrested close to 4,700 people last year for driving under the influence. That’s a 39% increase over 2010, says Department of Safety Commissioner Bill Gibbons.

According to state officials, more than 50% of Tennessee’s traffic-related deaths involved those not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.

Many Tennessee counties saw a dramatic decrease in deadly traffic accidents, including Hamilton, Bradley, McMinn, Meigs, and Sequatchie Counties.

Even with these low figures, one traffic-related death is too many. Remember to buckle up when you get behind the wheel and insist that any passenger does so as well. You might be saving lives.

If you have lost a loved one in a Tennessee traffic accident, including car accidents, commercial vehicle accidents, and motorcycle accidents, you need the help of an experienced wrongful death lawyer.

Attorney Mitch Grissim has successfully represented grieving families in pursuit of wrongful death claims in Nashville, Middle Tennessee, Antioch, Murfreesboro, and surrounding Tennessee areas.
